World'S First Typhoon Proof Wind Turbine

Groundbreaking of 10kW Magnus Vertical Axis Wind Turbine Project in Naidi Hills, Basco Batanes

March 30, 2021.  Basco, Batanes.
The groundbreaking for the demo project of the 10kW Magnus Vertical Axis Wind Turbine was held on this day, graced by the Honorable Governor Marilou Cayco, and the Vice Governor Ignacio Villa.  This will be the first installation of the typhoon-proof technology outside of japan.  According to Mr. Shigeto Mizumoto, Chief Strategy Officer of Challenergy, Inc. and one of the Directors of Challenergy Philippines, Inc., its local subsidiary, the demonstration aims to test the structure and the performance of the technology.  As the Magnus VAWT can withstand the strong winds of Batanes, which  may reach up to 340kph, then the technology can endure all other typhoons coming to the Philippines.  The contractor of the project is ATV Engineering Services, Inc. an experienced tower erector of the National Grid Corporation.

Challenergy Inc. signs an MOU with the Provincial Government of Batanes to demonstrate its 10kW Magnus Vertical Axis Wind Turbine

In August 2020, Challenergy, Inc. signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Provincial Government of Batanes (PG Batanes), represented by the good Governor, Marilou Cayco, with the Municipality of Basco, represented by the good Mayor, Demetrius Paul Narag, and with the Batanes Electric Cooperative (BATANELCO), represented by GM Victoria Mata, to implement a demonstration project of the 10kW Magnus Vertical Axis Wind Turbine in Naidi Hills, Barangay San Antonio, Basco.  This demo project is made possible by the Ministry of Environment of Japan.  The construction of Magnus-PH-01 will be completed in July 2021.

Dynamic young start-up develops breakthrough wind turbine technology

Challenergy, Inc., a start-up company composed of brilliant young Japanese engineers and entrepreneurs, has successfully developed the world's first wind turbine that can continuously generate power even in high speeds typical of Category 5 typhoon.

The 1-kW prototype of this technology is being field tested in Nanjo City, Okinawa.  In 2017, Okinawa was visited by Typhoon Talim which had a maximum recorded wind speed of 140mph (225kph).  The Magnus Vertical Axis Wind Turbine was shown to continue to generate power under a wind speed of 180kph.

Presently, Challenergy is developing its 10kW, and will be installing it in Okinawa in 2018.

In October 2017, Challenergy signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the National Power Corporation of the Philippines to conduct a feasibility study to understand the needs of the Philippines in terms of power, especially during typhoon calamities.  The study also aims to identify potential locations for the installation and demonstration of a 10-kW Magnus VAWT.
In a span of three (3) months, the study team visited the provinces of Catanduanes, Batanes, Albay and Leyte, to assess the different areas.

The results of the study was presented on January 18, Thursday, from 10:00a to 3:00pm, in  a seminar entitled "Climate Change Mitigation and Disaster Risk Adaptation Using Wind Energy and Satellite Communication" held at SEAMEO-Innotech, Commonwealth, Quezon City.
